(Actual cakes I tried to decorate.)
(Tried.)
When I volunteered to make sports cupcakes for a baby shower a couple of weeks ago, I wondered if I had Alzheimers, because I forgot I stink at decorating baked goods.
I thought I'd take the easy way out and find some little balls, or flags, or something to put on the top.
Yeah, right.
Apparently, nobody is into sports where I live.
This is Washington.
We're into Ultimate Frisbee, kayaking and running.
Not baseball, basketball and football.
That's why the Seattle Sonics went to Oklahoma, and the Mariners and the SeaHawks seem to lose all the time.
There are no sports cupcake decorations to be found.
Anywhere.
There was one candy mold you could paint with colored chocolate, stick an oreo in it and use it to put on a cupcake.
I don't know about you, but painting colored chocolate into molds doesn't sound like fun.
Plus you've got to wait for it to harden.
*Yawn*
Before long, panic set in as I scoured the aisles of every craft, grocery, and party store for something to help me out.
Nothing.
I guess I would be making them free hand.
"Oh crap!"
Yeah, that's what I said too.
Not only do I have Alzheimers, I have early Parkinson's.
Oh yes, I shake.
Especially when it comes to singing, and decorating things with frosting.
I started out on the baseballs.
They all looked like bloody Frankenstein babies.
Very nice.
Then the basketballs...
"Hmmm...not bad."
And onto the footballs...
"Hmmm...looks like Frankenstein's suit!"

*sigh*
Will I ever say no?
No.
Hey! I said it!
So I dropped them off at the shower, and went back to my house because I forgot I scheduled a meeting at the same time as the baby shower.
*dope smack*
I ended my meeting, and ran out the door so I could make sure I got a cupcake before they were all gone.
There they were, nicely displayed in one of those cupcake trees.
Untouched.
*sniff*
*sob*
"Oh, we thought those were decorations!"
Seriously?
Who decorates a baby shower with cupcakes?
Do you go to a baby shower and assume the cake is a pinata, so you don't eat it?
How odd.
I quickly forgave them though.
We have a baby born once every 60 years in our ward, so they're not used to this kind of stuff.
"Carrot, will you be finished with this post soon? I've got to go to bed."
Yes, yes.
Fast forward to yesterday.
I'm decorating the church gym for this man's 90th birthday, and I think to myself,
"His birthday is the day before my son's birthday!"
.....
....
"Crap! I forgot it's my sons birthday tomorrow! I know! I'll make him a cake!"

Yes, how quickly I forget.
I looked at cakes online and found the easiest cake I could make.
"Plex" from "Yo Gabba Gabba".
So I did...

...not make "Plex".
I made his cousin "Plax".
Any die-hard fan would know that "Plex" has yellow feet and hands, and a bunch of other details.
Apparently there aren't any die-hard fans at our house.
Nobody noticed.
They thought I made Plex.
As if.
As if I thought I was good enough to attempt that.
Maybe next year.

Shut up! You can totally decorate cakes! I would pay you for those cupcakes and one of those yogabagaba cakes too.
Oh you are too funny.
I tried to make a cake that was a pirate ship once. It would only work if it was on it's side on a plate...so it was more like a sinking pirate ship.
Since then I have taken to printing small pictures of favorite characters, laminating them and taping them to toothpics to put on the cake...or better yet, I buy an Ice Cream cake from DQ!
By the way...I didn't see any Frankenstein babies in that picture. They looked good to me!
Is it wrong that I love that Alzheimer's picture?
Is it? IS IT?
"Do you go to a baby shower and assume the cake is a pinata..." Funny you ask Carrot because I think that ALL the time.
Those are the best looking bloody Frankenstein babies/b-balls/suits I've seen in a long time.
Nice work.
Those are AWESOME cupcakes! They do look almost too cute to eat, IMO.
(Sorry, I won't include the cake...only because that show kinda creeps me out.)
They look fabulous! Good Job!
Next time you just fly me to Seattle. I'll put on my sequined catsuit and JUMP out of the cake at your next event. Nobody will even notice the frosting or decorating skills......especially when I start to sing my own updated metal mariachi version of "It's Not Unusual".....and then I pull a Michelle Pfeiffer and lay across the piano, and it breaks......and then I casually plop down on the lap of the man having his birthday thus inflicting pain and several injuries and then we'll culminate the party in the E.R.!
Today is Lauren's birthday. She will be the recipient of whatever cake I scavenge off the Kroger bakery clearance rack.
See, you try harder than I do and your efforts were a resounding success. Seriously, all the cakes/cupcakes are adorable to the infinite power.
I think those cupcakes and the plex/plax cake are the bomb!
lurved the cupcakes.....emma looked over my shoulder as i was looking at this post and she immediately loved the plex cake. i think her exact words were, "awww, it's plex from yo gabba gabba!" and then, "make me one, mama!"
so i thank you, carrot. really. please notice the sarcasm in my tone. it's intentional.
Great Job! :0)
I nearly fell off my chair when you said "No."
Then I realized you wasted it on a dumb rhetorical question.
Now it's going to be 30 years before you can rustle up another one.
The good news is that by then, you'll be a pro at decorating with frosting.
(Seriously, those cupcakes looked great. I'm definitely impressed.)
What are you talking about?? Those cupcakes look amazing, I would never have thought of making each one a ball. Plus, now I understand the sport-theme babyshower. Duh! I don't know why that sounded so wierd at first, but seeing your cupcakes I can see how that works. Give yourself a pat on the back.
I think the cupcakes look great. Why anyone would think they were for decorations is beyond me, but then again, many things are beyond me.
I'm still laughing about the Alzheimer's "cartoon".
Love the plex/plax cake.
Well, I think they're cute.
They look good to me!
As for the chocolate mold thingie, if you want to do that sometime, give me a yell. I have a box full of them-they are really easy.
And if Elastic does come here to jump out of a cake, I want an invite!!!
Yes, they were darling, but my goodness I would have eaten one...or two since no one else was!
While I was reading this post, Glitter saw the picture of your son's cake and said, "That's Plex. He's from Yo Gabba Gabba." Good job mama.
So funny! I cracked up. And the decorating would get oooo's and ahhhh's at my house.
I'm pretty sure I would have eaten your cupcakes! This is the best blog I've ever seen... You have a new fan!
