Hey, speaking of teeth.
We were speaking of teeth, weren't we?

Remember earlier, when I told you I look like Howdy Doody's twin sister?
(Actually, more like his smoking twin because my teeth aren't as white as his.)
I didn't really explain, did I?
I'm sure some of you thought I brushed my teeth so vigorously, that I knocked out one of my teeth.
No, no.
Long story short...
I was born gap toothed.
Yes, I was.
Straight teeth, but with a big old gap in the middle of my front.
My dad was a dentist.
My brother's got free braces, (because when your dad is a dentist, you get free braces, or oral surgery, or whatever.) but my dad decided that instead of braces, he would just stick some bonding in between and fill up the gap.
Sounds nice, right?
Yes, it is, but if braces were free, why couldn't I have just had some for 6 months to close it up?
*sniff*
When I was brushing me teeth a few days ago, my bonding (the gap was made larger right before my dad died) fell out.
It was horrifying to me.
Teeth matter.
When you've worked in a dental office, and your dad is a dentist, you notice peoples teeth. You are sure everyone does the same thing.
I don't know, do they?
I immediately started crying, and cursing my dad.
Okay, not cursing, but getting made.
"You could have just had me get braces! Was I not worth it?!"
I called my husband into the bedroom, sad down on the bed crying, and showed him what happened.
He was relieved.
He thought he'd done something wrong.
He looked again
(long pause) "I...I...can hardly tell!"
Whatever.
With no dental insurance, a van in the shop with a blown head gasket, not to mention all the other bills, and did I mention my husband is self employed? I could not imagine this situation being fixed.
So, what did I do?
I blogged about it.
That fixes things, right?
*sigh*
The next night, I was still weeping, and wailing, and gnashing my teeth, and cursing my dad.
"DAD!"
Did I mention he died?
"DAD! You have to fix this! You know I don't have insurance, or money to pay for this, and you caused this! I could have had braces!"
(I know, bratty.)
I fell asleep.
The next morning, my sister calls.
"I was reading your blog post, and forgot to tell you that I was talking to my dentist about your bonding" (because I always have problems with it)
She continued, "He said that he would do it."
"Oh great, how much will that cost?" I asked.
"Nothing!"
Uh...
"Nothing?"
"Yeah!"
"How?"
"He said, you are the child of a dentist. It's professional curteosy! He'll do it for free because dad was a dentist!"
(Picture me crying like I've just been given an extreme makeover)
Trixie says, "Are you still there?"
(cut to me still crying)
"yes"
Oh happy day! Right?
Shoot, I could just kiss that dentist before he even works on me.
So, tomorrow morning, I'm hopping a train to Portland, where Trixie will pick me up, and drive me four hours down to her house where her extremely generous dentist will fix my front teeth! Then I'll come back on Friday and be able to smile again!
*huge sigh*
Thank you Trixie!
Thank you dentist!
Thank you dad!
You came through for me!
I'm sure Heavenly Father had a part in it too, so I'll thank Him also!

First!
Congrats on the teeth getting fixed, yo.
Yay! :) I wish you a painless and pretty fix tomorrow! :)
Oh no!!! Oh yea!!!!
What a great guy. There are lots of dentists down there what with the dental school and all, so make sure the guy actually graduated.... ;)
Yay for nice dentists! I never realized there were so many of them out there... nice ones that is.
Whew, am I ever glad I left my comment ; )
I am even more glad you're getting your teeth fixed FOR FREE!!! My dad was not a dentist, but because I had the WORST teeth in the county I lived in, when I was around 14 I got braces FOR FREE. Every day I thank my lucky stars!!!
I love gap toothed smiles. And according to Bee, gap teeth make better lovers, grrrrrrlwlll
You know what? It pays to whine, and sometimes to whine to your dad (whether he's alive or not - and your dad is, he's just bodily challenged).
I kind of would have liked to see your little gap, and I hear you on the "why my brothers but not me?" thing.
That is so extreamly awesome! Sometime I will have to tell you the story behind my free braces....it is a good one.
lol on "i'm sure heavenly father had a part in it too.." is that your miracle and your big news? cuz i'm not sure i know your email address since i guess i emailed the invite to your hubby's email. that is awesome about your teeth. kind of a long way to go for it, but awesome still. what a nice dentist!
Whew, glad I commented!
I love that your dad answered you in such a cool way!
Being a gap tooth kind of gal, I'm with Jean knee. My dentist has kindly tried to hint that he can make my smile better, but I'm ok with it just the way it is!
That is one fan-tabulous New Year's gift! Maybe you can talk him into a courtesy bleach tray too - just bat your eyelashes and remind him who your dad is ;)
That is the most awesome thing I have ever heard! No, not the part about your blog going private and then you saying, no it's not. The part about the dentist. That is so awesome of him that I almost cried reading it. Really... my eyes were a little watery!
not to mention your sister too because if she didn't say anything, nothing would have happened!
Wow! What an amazing dentist!!! Good luck at your appointment! We need to see pics of the new teeth! :)
Oh, Happy Day! Well, except for that 4 hour drive part. BTDT. But it'll be worth it in the end. Post some pics when you're all fixed-up and purdy, will 'ya!!
Scared straight!
Yay for teeth miracles. That's awesome.
YAY!!! Congrats!
I'm so happy for you :)
By the way, I sent you an e-mail just in case.
If you ever go private let it be known that *I* should be invited numero uno.
Don't forget to post before and after pictures.
Ok. Are we really supposed to send you an email. I'm so confused.
I am #1!!
January 7, 2008: NCS is #1.
Yay! Glad you slipped the "kidding" in there, 'cause that was so believable. I've considered going private about a bazillion times now, but my Ego would beat me up, I'm sure.
Congrats on the fix! Hoo-Ray!
Miss your blog. Primary is holding me hostage. Happy Belated Blog b-day, Happy New Year, and congratulations on having a beautiful smile! Hope I'm not too inconsistent of a visitor to get invited to that private blog you might start. I think mine will be the next to go private--of course it doesn't really matter since I only blog about 7 times a year.
When my ego comes after me, I tell it to go eat a cookie.
What? Wasn't using caulk in between your teeth good enough for you?
Dental Prima Donna.
My rotten tooth is throbbing with happiness for you, Carrot, and wishing that my dad was a dentist. He's a mechanic. He can put a muffler on me to drown out my loudness but that won't help my teeth any, now will it?
Have a happy, happy Tooth Treatment Tour about the countryside!
HURRAH! That is wonderful news about your tooth! Ah... don't you love it when people are generous and kind :) I hope you have a fun time as well as getting your teeth fixed!
Awe.some.
How come you don't like it when I comment?
Ah well, i won't take it too personally. A lot of people don't like it when Nobody comments.
I am so happy about your blessed teeth in spite of the fact I apparently dropped the ball by failing to drop a comment on your last post.
Never mind I commented on the post before.
(Frankly, I dropped so many comments your way on the birthday of your person--aren't you happy I was in bed with strep that day?--I think I ought to have honorary inclusion in your life-time membership club no matter if I miss the birthday of your blog. Don't you agree?)
Yay for you on your teeth! That is an amazing story.
Can I be out of trouble? I forgot my own 1 year blog birthday. I do read your blog. Faithfully.
Highway run... into the midnight sun...
Wheels go round and round in my mind...
K is forever yours, faithfully.
(Don't ask me how I know this song - it came out after I was decapitated.)
Yeah! I'm decapitated, and you're throwing a fit about your TEETH?
Whiner.
Wow! I was gone for a week and I think you posted every single day. I have a lot to catch up on.
Congrats on your free teeth fixin'! But it made me wonder about my teen. She has always had straight teeth and a gap. It has closed a little each year, but I should get a professional opinion on whether it will close completely. I don't want her cursing me when I'm dead. :)
You do realize that by gettin' the gap patched, you are missing out on a great way to spit? Gaps are pretty useful. (I've always wanted to spit like a camel, personally.)
Congrats on the good news, anyway, and NO, you may not consider going private and not invite me--I don't care how many posts I miss commenting on--you're stuck with me, Carrot.
Welcome Home party at my house on Friday! Can you say extreme makeover reunion!??!? I'm so excited for you.
Btw, I didn't notice the gap Sunday. Were you keeping your mouth closed, or something? I did notice, however, that little boy N didn't want to go to primary. My heart aches for all the new Sunbeams every January and their longings for nursery snacks of yore.
I've been meaning to ask you a golden parenting question. But I'll save that for another day. Maybe as a reward for another good blog. :)
Rats! Your blog entry is from Sunday? So, that explains why you haven't called me. I left a message for you yesterday and then I drove by the house today... Ok, yes, you can call me "stalker". But I have something for you when you get back.
Holy Cow! That is AWESOME!
I was totally convinced you were going private by the way. I felt special...for a few minutes.
I hope you have a great time while you are out of town and enjoy your new smile!
What a huge blessing.
Professional courtesies...nice.
I'm glad you're getting your teeth fixed, but what are you going to have done about your malfunctioning epiglottis?
Congrats on the generous dentist! I too am the child of a former dentist and I too am not happy when I am faced with dental work with somebody who isn't my dad! I wish my current dentist would give me a similar deal. I hope you have a lovely trip and return and share all the details - I always enjoy your blog! Thanks
*giggling hysterically*
No offense, but me no likey going to the dentist. So when I had to chose between college assistance and getting braces, I chose college.
I saw Carrot this afternoon (brag, brag) and she looked mahvelous. And Trixie is very pretty.
Congratulations on your new bonding! I love it when things like that happen!
